Releases that impress with a single play

Guitar great Michael Schenker, singer-songwriter-guitarist Orianthi, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds and an oustanding tribute to the late Levon Helm highlight a bevy of new titles available now.

Artist: Michael Schenker
Title: Temple of Rock (Inakustik)
You might be interested if you like: UFO, The Scorpions
Tell me more: Like Deep Purple's Ritchie Blackmore, one-time UFO lead guitarist Michael Schenker influenced countless players to pursue the art of perfection when playing their instrument. Because rather than simply shred, Schenker blended emotion into a distinct voice that makes his work on the guitar so timeless. On his "Temple of Rock" (available on DVD, Blu-ray and CD), Schenker proves his prowess on electric guitar continues to be a wonder. Recorded and filmed live at the High Voltage Festival in London in July 2011 and at 013 in the Netherlands in May 2012, the highlights come strong and fast. There is high-octane '70s hard rock ("Blackout"), melodic metal featuring Schenker's graceful side (""Doctor Doctor") and breathtaking lead work ("Lights Out"). Tell me more: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds is on fire throughout "International Magic Live At The O2," captured in February 2012 (the version of "Everybody's On The Run" is simply epic). On the Blu-ray version (reviewed here), there is a wealth of bonus material including the troupe playing live at the NME Awards last year and an acoustic set filmed in Toronto in late 2011. There is also an audio CD with a dozen demos. "International Magic Live At The O2" is available in three formats: a video download, as a 2-disc DVD version and on Blu-ray with an exclusive audio CD. Artist: Orianthi
Title: Heaven In This Hell (Robo Records)
You might be interested if you like: Steve Vai, Joe Bonamassa, Heart
Tell me more: Anyone who saw the Michael Jackson documentary "This Is It" and wondered whatever happened to the fantastic young guitarist featured throughout the film should get a hold of "Heaven In This Hell," the new disc from Orianthi. A genuine triple threat thanks to her abilities as singer, songwriter and guitarist, "Heaven In This Hell" boasts a rich set of songs exploring Orianthi's love of hard rock, blues and power ballads. Like Joe Bonamassa, Orianthi has infused new life into modern rock. From the Southern rock strains of "Fire" to the heavy blues of "How Do You Sleep?" and emotive ballad "Rock," Orianthi's stellar guitar binds the diverse mix together. You might be interested if you like: Levon Helm and The Band, Grace Potter, Roger Waters, Gregg Allman
Tell me more: Over the years there have been heartfelt tributes to everyone from John Lennon and Johnny Cash to Freddie Mercury. But there is something different and special about "Love For Levon: A Benefit To Save The Barn" (available on DVD, Blu-ray and audio CD). The range of performers who gathered in October 2012 to celebrate the life and music of Levon Helm included legends Roger Waters, Mavis Staples and Gregg Allman as well as rising newcomers Grace Potter, Eric Church and Robert Randolph. Highlights include Potter's chilling "I Shall Be Released" and a blues-styled gospel take on "Move Along Train" courtesy of Mavis Staples. Proceeds from the project will be used to help his estate keep ownership of Helm's home, barn and studio, and to continue The Midnight Ramble Sessions (a series of live performances at his studio).
