Kasey Chambers and The English Beat celebrate the past with new releases

Singer-songwriter Kasey Chambers and The English Beat have new releases worth celebrating.
Artist: Kasey Chambers

Album: Storybook (Sugar Hill Records)

You might be interested in buying this if you like: Joan Osborne, Lucinda Williams, Jann Browne

Tell me more: 2012 has been marked by a number of excellent tribute albums, with Joan Osborne's "Bring It On Home"(featuring vintage blues and soul standards) and Macy Gray's "Covered" (offering a mix of rock material) being two of the best. Now comes a similarly-ambitious effort from Aussie songstress Kasey Chambers, whose aptly-titled "Storybook" (due July 30 on Sugar Hills Records) equals those gems.  The uptempo version of Lucinda Williams' "Happy Woman Blues," a tender take on the late Gram Parson's "Return of the Grievous Angel" and the intoxicating Matthew Ryan-penned country-rocker "Guilty" are among the standouts on an across-the-disc treasure. Chambers is a fantastic singer, and her emotional soprano really thrusts material originally covered from everyone from Steve Earle to John Prine in a new light.

Album: The Complete Beat (Shout! Factory)

You might be interested in buying this if you like: General Public, Fine Young Cannibals, Pato Banton

Tell me more: Founded in England back in 1978, 2 Tone ska outfit The English Beat fused ska, reggae, pop, soul and a dash of punk rock musical stylings against lyrics mostly addressing love and social-political topics. Headed by singer-guitarist Dave Wakeling and vocalist Ranking Roger, the group scored success on radio and across dance floors in the early '80s with hits such as "Mirror in the Bathroom," "Too Nice to Talk To" and "All Out to Get You." Now Shout! Factory has issued "The Complete Beat," a boxed set that features the band's original three CDs ("I Just Can't Stop It," "Wha'ppen?" and "Special Beat Service") and two bonus discs featuring rare and unreleased tracks. The collection also includes a 24-page book with an essay and rare photographs. Released on July 10, "The Complete Beat" is the ultimate keepsake for fans of the groundbreaking band.

The Fixx, Stone Temple Pilots and Shawn Jones, Impress with new releases

The Fixx and Stone Temple Pilots celebrate big anniversaries with epic releases while gifted singer-songwriter Shawn Jones is empowered by struggles

Artist: The Fixx

Album: Beautiful Friction (Kirtland Records)

Worth buying: Yes

You might be interested in buying this if you like: the 1982 Fixx album “Shuttered Room,” Simple Minds, Peter Gabriel

Tell me more: It has been 30 years since the Fixx burst on the international New Wave music scene with the album “Shuttered Room” which yielded such timeless modern rock hits as “Stand or Fall” and “Red Skies.” Fast forward to 2012 and the British quintet has released another epic rock album, “Beautiful Friction.” Every track on the disc is outstanding, with the driving anthem “Anyone Else,” luxuriant “Second Time Around” and hypnotic “Just Before Dawn” building on the outfit’s wonderful legacy. The ferocious “Take a Risk” and textured “Shaman” in particular showcase a band that is interested in continuing to mine new musical territory while using the hottest political and economic issues of the day as the lyrical focus of many of the songs.

Artist: The Stone Temple Pilots

DVD/Blu-ray Title: Alive In the Windy City (Eagle Rock Entertainment)

Worth buying: Yes

You might be interested in buying this if you like: Velvet Revolver, Nirvana, Blind Melon

Tell me more: Although it’s been 20 years since Stone Temple Pilots formed in San Diego in 1992, “Alive In the Windy City” marks the first concert authorized for release on DVD by the rock outfit. On the recently-issued DVD (also available on Blu-ray), the band is captured while performing a hard-rocking 18-track set at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago in March 2010. With lead singer Scott Weiland in fine form, the rest of the band (bassist Robert DeLeo, guitarist Dean DeLeo, drummer Eric Kretz) is amped while performing the mix of classic and new material. Highlights abound, with powerful versions of “Vasoline,” “Plush” and “Big Empty” thrilling an eager and enthusiastic crowd. The DVD includes an interview with the band as a bonus feature.

Album: Struggle Makes You Stronger (High Drive Records)

Worth buying: Yes

You might be interested in buying this if you like: Joe Bonamassa, Jonny Lang, Tab Benoit

Tell me more: Few artists possess the blend of guitar prowess, songwriting skills and great vocals displayed by Shawn Jones. On the Southern California-based artist’s latest album “Struggle Makes You Stronger,” it’s clear there is little that Jones can’t express in a song. From the scorching blues-rock of “She Don’t Know (‘Bout Her Own Mojo)” and heartfelt soul of “Day Without Rain” to the tender ballad “Sweet Victoria” and countrified blues of “Lonesome Road,” Jones has crafted another masterpiece.

Beatles Stories: Fab Four's legacy celebrated via wealth of magical tales

Fans of the world's greatest band may think they know everything about the Fab Four, but think again...

ImageDVD title: Beatles Stories (Julukesy Films)

You might be interested in buying this if you like: The Beatles, the Monkees, the Bangles, rock documentary films

Tell me more: What do members of the Beach Boys, Badfinger and Bangles, and actors Henry Winkler, Sir Ben Kingsley and Jon Voight have in common? All are among the dozens of notables who share fascinating tales relating to the Fab Four on the forthcoming documentary Beatles Stories (released July 7, 2012 in honor of Ringo Starr's 72nd birthday). Filmmaker/author/singer-songwriter/Beatles fan Seth Swirsky set out in 2005 to document personal reflections from famous and not-so-famous personalities on both sides of the Atlantic to recount a wealth of stories ranging from revealing events that played out when the members of the band were teens just starting out in Liverpool to seminal events that played out during the height of Beatlemania and incidents involving John, Paul, George and Ringo following the breakup of the group. Brian Wilson, Susanna Hoffs, Justin Hayward, Art Garfunkel, Graham Nash and Denny Laine (of Moody Blues and Paul McCartney & Wings fame) provide some of the best moments in the wonderful film. It is bittersweet to see recently-lost names such as Monkees singer Davy Jones, Andrew Gold, one-time Capitol Records president Alan Livingston and Norman "Hurricane" Smith featured in some of their last interviews, but that sobering element of loss enhances the importance of Swirsky's winning film.
Beatles Stories is a must-see for fans of rock's greatest band, as well as anyone who loves classic  rock 'n' roll.
In addition to the Beatles Stories documentary itself, the DVD/Blu-ray release has many bonus materials including more than a dozen additional interviews (including with famed Wings guitarist Laurence Juber), a commentary track by Swirsky and a short feature on the aforementioned Normal "Hurricane" Smith, the Beatles's long-time recording engineer who worked with Sir George Martin on the majority of Beatles recordings in the 1960s.
