The Kanye Incident & Why Everybody Wins
In case you haven’t heard: Rapper Kanye West rudely interrupted Taylor Swifts acceptance speech at the MTV VMA’s and went on a rant telling the audience that Beyonce should have won. My take: Kanye plans these things. They are premeditated to get him publicity…….and guess what? When he does something like this, everybody wins These stunts get him into the press and it plays into his bad boy image. Then he apologizes on TV after the fact and this gets him more press. It won’t hurt his sales. He has a bad boy image. It’s what his fans expect, and all his fans will want to know if he raps about the incident on his next album so it will serve as promotion for his next album. Taylor Swift wins too. The incident garners her a tremendous amount of publicity and sympathy. All her fans are upset (and rightly so) by what has happened and will rally around her in a show of support. They will love her even more. It will no doubt win her new fans too. Beyonce wins too: Later during the broadcast when she won an award, she did the right thing and invited Taylor Swift back on stage, to finish her acceptance speech. Beyonce will get extra kudos from fans and non fans alike for doing this. MTV wins: . Don’t be surprised if they use footage of the Kanye incident to promo next years VMA’s. The incident adds to their “You never know what outrageous thing will happen at the VMA’s” image and this will increase their viewers The Media gets something new (but trivial) to talk about, and news network talking heads get to debate if celebrities are going to far. Like I said, everybody wins, except us the viewing public, who deserve better.
